Every morning at half past six, the sound of Edo Castle drums signaled the start of the ascent of the feudal lords and bannermen to the castle. Among them was Ibuya Manjiro, a samurai who had only been in service for four months. Manjiro was interested in a young man watching him run up Sanbyakuzaka as he climbed the castle. One day, Chiba Shusaku, whom Manjiro respected, died, and Manjiro and Kiyokawa Hachiro had an argument on the night of the death of their son, and they had a serious fight on the riverbank. Manjiro was injured in the fight, and the doctor Tezuka Ryoan came to treat him. He was the young man who always watched the climb to the castle (Episode 1). ▼While eating at his favorite soba restaurant, Ryoan happened to meet Manjiro again. “I have business nearby,” said Ryoan and Manjiro as they walked down the same road. They had both come to see Oseki, the daughter of the head priest of Zenpukuji Temple. The two confessed their feelings to Oseki, but Oseki replied, “I’ll marry the person who will become the head priest.” On the way home, Ryoan was attacked by someone (Episode 2). ●Features of this volume/In Volume 1, the story progresses around the meeting between Ryoan and Manjiro, who later become best friends, and how each of them begins to seriously embark on their own paths.
